Wu Wei – effortless action

The art of being in flow

Wu Wei – effortless action

Wu Wei literally translates as 'non-action', which leads many to believe Taoism preaches laziness. The truth is the exact opposite. Wu Wei means action without friction, without ego-driven force and without unnecessary strain – the state elite athletes, artists and musicians call being 'in the zone'.

Forced action you will recognize: you get stressed, drink a fourth cup of coffee, tense your shoulders and try to hammer out a solution with raw willpower. The result is usually a mess – and you end up drained.

Wu Wei action looks different: you step back, breathe, let go of prestige and listen to the situation. You wait for the right moment and then act calmly, precisely and smoothly. Maximum effect, minimum effort – like chopping vegetables without thinking about every movement of the knife.

The sage acts without striving and teaches without words.Daodejing, chapter 2
