Jing, Qi and Shen

The three treasures of the body

Taoism does not see body and mind as two separate parts – the body is itself an entire universe. To thrive, we need to care for three inner elements.

Jing (essence) is your basic physical vitality, your deep energy reserve. Qi (life energy) is the dynamic life force constantly circulating within you – stress and tension create 'blockages' in the flow, leading to fatigue and unease. Shen (spirit) is your clear, awake consciousness.

When Qi flows freely and Jing is strong, the mind – Shen – becomes crystal clear. That is why Taoists train the body with breathing, gentle movement and relaxation: not as luxury, but as maintenance of the whole system.

Reflection

Where in your body do you feel your energy getting stuck when you are stressed? Shoulders, jaw, stomach?

Today's practice

Take three deep breaths down into your belly right now. That is today's entire task – remembering that the body is part of this.
